Vol. 40 No. 2
Secretary-Treasurer of the Law Student Division
With the new school year in full swing, it is time to get down to business. The ABA Law Student Division encourages students to create and participate in new programs and initiatives that will benefit your schools and communities.
The Division’s Work-A-Day project is one way to get involved. A themed, one-day public service project, Work-A-Day encourages law students from across the country to give back to their communities in a meaningful way. This year’s theme, “Civil Gideon: Representation for All,” will raise awareness of the issues low-income people face when trying to access civil courts.
The Division’s Public Interest Committee has created a toolkit that will help you plan events around this year’s theme. For the toolkit and more information about Work-A-Day, visit http://ambar.org/lsdwork.
Through its Grant Program, the Division can provide financial support to assist student organizations of ABA-approved law schools in establishing original programs that emphasize diversity, ethics, professionalism training, law student mental health and wellness, veterans’ advocacy, and public interest/service activities (like those you may create for Work-A-Day).
The program is a great way to obtain funding to help get a new program off the ground, and it is very simple to do. Grants of up to $500 are awarded on a reimbursement basis for programs that meet all requirements. When applying for a grant, it is important to provide as much information and detail as possible. The more detail you provide, the easier the process will be, and the better your chances will be at getting funding in time for your program.
The Division and I are working on ways to make the process even easier, including a PDF, web-based application that will cut down on the response time and make it less likely we will need more information to evaluate the application. For the complete guidelines and application, go to http://ambar.org/lsdgrant.
Encourage your fellow students to join the Law Student Division. The Division provides numerous ways to contribute to public interest programs, participate in competitions, save money during law school, and so much more.
I am honored to serve as your secretary-treasurer this year. I take this position seriously, and I want y’all to contact me with any questions you may have about the Grant Program.
