Governor’s Message

Welcome to a new year of law school! To those who are just starting first year, good luck; and to those who are starting the final year, congratulations! I am excited to work with you during this busy time to ensure that your school accesses all of the ABA benefits. Should you have any questions about what an ABA membership can do for your school, please contact me. As the school year begins, and now that membership is free, this is an excellent time to encourage your friends and classmates to get involved with the ABA.

With the current fiscal concerns of the Division, I was disappointed to see the proposed governance restructure plan narrowly fail at the Annual Meeting Assembly; however, I am continually working with the Board of Governors and the Law Student Division staff to cut costs while expanding resources and benefits to students. One measure we are exploring is creating online elections for our Board of Governors positions. E-voting allows all students opportunities for involvement, regardless of socioeconomic status, and it also reduces the overhead costs associated with elections at our Annual Meeting, our Spring Circuit Meeting, and our Spring Board of Governors Meeting. I am confident that the revisions will be passed at our Fall Board of Governors meeting in time for implementation at the Spring Circuit meetings.

Our Division is also diligently advocating to save the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. The United States House of Representatives recently voted to eliminate the program, which could be catastrophic to current students. Cutting PSLF threatens to exacerbate the gap in access to justice. Thus, the ABA is pushing a grassroots movement to save #Loan4Giveness. To get involved, contact your Senators on their social media pages and use the hashtag; it’s that simple! You can also create a video discussing how PSLF impacts you and upload it. The ABA will invite a handful of law students who upload videos to Washington, D.C. to lobby directly to our congressional leaders. For more information, please visit http://www.ambar.org/loan4giveness

As always, I look forward to serving you. Please contact me for any ABA inquiries or requests.
