Top 13 most expensive Hollywood divorces

Divorce Law

Some people dream of being rich and famous. After all, celebrities have it all, right? They get to wear designer clothes, have stylists do their hair and makeup, and receive attention from just about everyone. However, when it comes to relationships, Hollywood A-listers seem to have the most trouble. With busy schedules and commitment issues, stars are often getting married too quickly, and getting divorced even faster.

Here is a list of the top 13 Hollywood couples (in reverse order) with the most expensive divorces. Obviously, they did not sign a prenuptial agreement and were forced to split their earnings with their exes.

13. Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall: $25 million

Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger and supermodel Jerry Hall hooked up while he was still married to then-wife Bianca. Even though Jagger and Hall dated for a long time and had several children together, they were divorced just nine years after officially tying the knot. Rumors were flying around that the ceremony was not valid and that Jagger had an affair which resulted in a child with supermodel Luciana Gimenez. When everything was said and done, Hall received $25 million and custody of their kids.

12. Ted Danson and Casey Coates: $30 million

Famous for his 10-year run on NBC’s sitcom “Cheers,” Ted Danson married Casey Coates in 1976. The two had been through a lot together over the decades. She suffered a paralyzing stroke in 1979 while giving birth to their first child. Danson even took a six-month hiatus from acting to nurse her back to health. Sadly, after 15 years of marriage and two children, he started dating Whoopi Goldberg. The two split in 1992, and she received $30 million.

11. Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills: $38.5 million

Apparently, money can’t buy love for this member of the Beatles. He married Heather Mills, a one-legged model and advocate of banning land mines, because she reminded him of his late wife. As sweet as that sounds, their divorce was an ugly battle. After only four years of marriage, one child, and a media frenzy, she was awarded $38.5 million in a settlement along with $70,000 per year for child support.

10. Michael and Diandra Douglas $45 million

These two wed in 1977 and had a toxic 20-year marriage. Diandra, a documentary producer and owner of her own clothing line, had enough with his affairs. In 1997, she filed for divorce and won $45 million and custody of their son, Cameron. Michael Douglas has since moved on and married Catherine Zeta-Jones.

9. James Cameron and Linda Hamilton: $50 million

The romance between filmmaker James Cameron and actress Linda Hamilton began, as most do in Hollywood, on the set of “Terminator 2” in 1991. They wed in 1997, but during their short 17-month marriage, James Cameron spent more time with a “Titanic” star, Suzy Amis, than his wife. Despite having a child together, the couple inevitably split. He had to relinquish half of his “Titanic” revenues to her.

8. Kenny and Marianne Rogers: $60 million

The “know when to hold ‘em” country star was very successful throughout the 1970s and 1980s. He eventually became a photographer, author, and owner of a chain of restaurants. It was in 1977 that he married his fourth wife Marianne Gordon after the two met on the set of “Hee Haw.” After having a son together, they filed for divorce in 1993. Although Kenny Rogers was worth a reported $250 million, Marianne only received $60 million. He willingly gave her the money, though, and even stated that she deserved it.

7. Madonna and Guy Ritchie: $76 million

Madonna had been a pop superstar for decades when she met English filmmaker Guy Ritchie. A year later, they had a son and tied the knot. In 2008, after eight years of marriage, Guy Ritchie supposedly could not keep up to speed with the “Like a Virgin” singer when it came to adopting more children, being Kaballah-loving, and open-minded. She was forced to pay him a whopping $76 million.

6. Kevin Costner and Cindy Silva: $80 million

The list of Kevin Costner films is virtually endless, from “Field of Dreams” to “Dances with Wolves.” However, he married his college sweetheart in 1978 before he earned his riches. Despite his infidelities throughout the 1990s, Cindy strived to make the marriage work. Unfortunately, three kids and 16 years were not enough to tie him down. In 1994, she received $80 million.

5. Harrison Ford and Melissa Mathison: $85 million

These two managed to keep their relationship out of the spotlight. That did not help much, though, when they filed for divorce after 18 years of marriage and two children. However, their divorce was also private from the media. Apparently, she was awarded $85 million plus profits from his future earnings on movies that were made when they were still together, like the Indiana Jones franchise.

4. Steven Spielberg and Amy Irving: $100 million

Famous for her role in “Carrie,” Amy Irving wed Jaws director Steven Spielberg in 1985. Only four short years later, their marriage came to an end. This Hollywood power couple played nice, perhaps for the sake of their son, and Steven Spielberg handed over $100 million. He claimed a prenuptial agreement was written on a napkin, but it did not hold up as an authorized legal document in court.

3. Neil Diamond and Marcia Murphey: $150 million

Neil Diamond was practically a household name ever since the 1960s. With chart-topping hits, record-breaking concert attendances, and over 100 million records sold worldwide, he was already married when he met TV producer Marcia Murphey in 1969. He divorced his then-wife and married Marcia just three weeks later. The couple stayed together for 25 years, but Diamond participated in extramarital activities. They had two children together, so Diamond was happy to give Marcia half of his earnings – and even claimed she was the most wonderful woman in the world.

2. Michael Jordan and Juanita Vanoy: $168 million

Michael Jordan is legendary for not only his basketball career but also his shoes and numerous sponsors. He met Chicago bank officer Juanita Vanoy in 1989. The pair had three children together and were together for 18 years before signing a divorce. She received a staggering $168 million in the settlement.

1. Mel and Robyn Gibson: $425 million

In 2006, Robyn divorced her husband of 26 years. This Hollywood couple is notorious for having the most expensive celebrity divorce. Mel Gibson was worth $850 million and was forced to split this number clear down the middle.
