What causes us madness in March? Threats to legal aid!

Legal Aid Defender

We are under attack, law students.

As you may have heard, President Donald Trump recently released a budget proposal that completely eliminates funding for the Legal Services Corporation. As the largest single funder of civil legal aid in the country, eliminating funding for LSC would have a devastating impact on communities and individuals around the country. Please join us in the fight to save LSC.

Enlist as a Legal Aid Defender at www.DefendLegalAid.org.

A personalized Legal Aid Defender card will be created for everyone who signs up. The card, which contains each individual’s personal message for their Members of Congress will be printed and hand-delivered to Congress.

Which Law School will enlist the most Defenders?

The law school that enlists the most Legal Aid Defenders will be announced at the Law Student Division Assembly at the ABA Annual Meeting. The SBA and ABA reps of the “winning” school will also be invited to ABA Day in Washington 2018 (travel and hotel paid) where they will join their states in meetings on Capitol Hill with Members of Congress and congressional staff.

The contest ends at ABA Day on April 25, but the ABA Governmental Affairs Office is asking that individuals sign up at www.DefendLegalAid.org by April 11 to ensure that the cards and messages are delivered in time for the appropriations process. The GAO is also making all of their graphics and materials available for you to promote the campaign (there are some specific graphics geared towards law students).

If you would like to share your personal Legal Aid Defender card (sample) with your fellow students, please register for the campaign and contact Jared Hess at jared.hess@americanbar.o… for a copy.
